Section 394 (Manual Transmission): Installation: Transmission

  1. Using the transmission jack, raise and position the transmission to the engine and clutch.
  2. Install the nine bolts retaining the transmission to the engine.

  3. Install the six bolts retaining the crossmember to the frame.

  4. Install the transmission insulator to crossmember nuts.

  5. Remove the High-Lift Transmission Jack.

  6. Connect the clutch hydraulic to the clutch slave cylinder.

  7. On 4-wheel drive vehicles, install the transfer case. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE - AUTOMATIC SHIFT .
  8. Install the exhaust hanger into the insulator.

  9. Install a new exhaust converter outlet gasket, then install the catalytic converter to the muffler bolts.

  10. Install the exhaust inlet crossover pipe bolts.

  11. Install the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVE SHAFTS .
  12. Install the front driveshaft, if so equipped. For additional information, refer to DRIVE SHAFTS .
  13. Install the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTERS .
  14. Connect the electrical connectors to the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S).

  15. Connect the electrical connector to the reverse lamp switch.

  16. Connect the following:
    1. Connect the electrical connector to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
    2. Connect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector to the bracket.

  17. Connect the wiring harness to the bracket.

  18. Refill the transmission with the specified amount of fluid.
    • Use MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON®.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  21. Install the upper gearshift lever and the outer gearshift lever boot and console assembly as an assembly. For additional information, refer to SHIFT LEVER & BOOT .
