Section 394 (Manual Transmission): Installation: Transmission

- Using the transmission jack, raise and position the transmission to the engine and clutch.
- Install the nine bolts retaining the transmission to the engine.
- Install the six bolts retaining the crossmember to the frame.
- Install the transmission insulator to crossmember nuts.
- Remove the High-Lift Transmission Jack.
- Connect the clutch hydraulic to the clutch slave cylinder.
- On 4-wheel drive vehicles, install the transfer case. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE - AUTOMATIC SHIFT .
- Install the exhaust hanger into the insulator.
- Install a new exhaust converter outlet gasket, then install the catalytic converter to the muffler bolts.
- Install the exhaust inlet crossover pipe bolts.
- Install the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVE SHAFTS .
- Install the front driveshaft, if so equipped. For additional information, refer to DRIVE SHAFTS .
- Install the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTERS .
- Connect the electrical connectors to the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S).
- Connect the electrical connector to the reverse lamp switch.
- Connect the following:
- Connect the electrical connector to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
- Connect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector to the bracket.
- Connect the wiring harness to the bracket.
- Refill the transmission with the specified amount of fluid.
- Use MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON®.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Install the upper gearshift lever and the outer gearshift lever boot and console assembly as an assembly. For additional information, refer to SHIFT LEVER & BOOT .
