Removal and Installation

CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
NOTE: If removing the intermediate shaft only, proceed to item seven in the removal procedure.
  1. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  2. If removing the steering column, remove the steering column opening trim cover and reinforcement.
  3. If removing the steering column, remove the multifunction switch. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES  in this section.
  4. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Item 5: Steering Wheel Bolt Removal Note 

  1. Loosen the bolt and do not remove until the steering wheel has been loosened from the column.

Item 6: Steering Wheel Removal Note 

  1. Using the special tool, press on the bolt until the steering wheel is loose from the column.
    • Remove and discard the steering wheel bolt.
    • Remove the steering wheel.

Item 7: Intermediate Shaft Slider Bolt Removal Note 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. For additional information, refer to LIFTING .

Item 11: Steering Column Removal Note 

  1. If the steering column release motors are being removed, support the steering column in a soft-jawed vice.

Item 3: Horn Switch Springs Installation Note 

  1. To provide correct tension between the horn pad and the horn switch, install the yellow horn switch springs at the bottom of the horn switch pad and the silver springs at the top.
