Instrument Panel: Removal

    ALL VEHICLES 

  1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Lock the steering column.
  3. Remove the front seats. For additional information, refer to SEATING .
  4. Remove the screws and position the parking brake release handle aside.

  5. Remove the front door scuff plates.
  6. Remove the LH and RH lower cowl kick panels.
    • Remove the pin-type retainer.

  7. Remove the screws and position the hood release handle aside.

  8. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
    1. Remove the screws.
    2. Remove the steering column cover.

  9. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement.
    • Remove the bolts and remove the reinforcement.

  10. Disconnect the brake pedal position (BPP) switch electrical connector.

  11. If equipped, disconnect the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch electrical connector.

  12. If equipped, disconnect the shift cable from the steering column.
    1. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever.
    2. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.

  13. Disconnect the upper intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft.
    • Remove the pinch bolt.

  15. Remove the LH and RH side garnish mouldings.
    1. Remove the bolt covers and remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the assist handle.
    3. Remove the windshield side garnish moulding.

  17. Remove the door mouldings.
  18. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the ground wire from the RH side lower kick panel.

  19. CAUTION: To avoid damaging the bulkhead electrical connectors, be sure the release tab is fully depressed before pulling release lever into the disconnect position.
  20. Disconnect the LH side bulkhead electrical connector.
    • Press the release tab and pull the release lever.

  21. Remove the audio unit.
    • Insert the removal tool.
    • Remove and support the audio unit.

  22. Disconnect the audio unit electrical connector and antenna cable.

  23. Lower the glove compartment.
    • Press the release tabs inward while lowering the compartment.

  24. Through the glove compartment opening, disconnect the blend door actuator electrical connector.

  25. Through the glove compartment opening, disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.

  26. Raise and secure the glove compartment.
    • Press the release tabs inward while raising the glove compartment.

  27. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille.

  28. Remove the instrument panel cowl top bolts.

  29. If equipped, remove the floor console. For additional information, refer to CONSOLE - FLOOR .
  30. EARLY BUILD 

  31. If not equipped with the high-series floor console, remove the cup holders.

  32. Release the clips and remove the restraints control module (RCM) cover.

  33. LATE BUILD 

  34. If not equipped with high-series floor console, remove the consolette mat.

  35. Remove the screws and remove the restraints control module (RCM) cover.

  36. Remove the consolette base.
    • Remove the screws and remove the base.

  38. Remove the gearshift lever. For additional information, refer to MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION .
  39. Remove the screws and remove the manual transmission consolette.

  40. ALL VEHICLES 

  41. Disconnect the RCM electrical connector.
    1. Release the locking tab.
    2. Disconnect the RCM electrical connector and ground strap bolt.

  42. Pull the floor carpeting back.

  44. Disconnect the instrument panel main harness.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Release the retaining clips.
    3. Remove the ground strap.

  45. 4X4 VEHICLES 

  46. Disconnect the instrument panel main harness.
    1. From underneath the vehicle, release the instrument panel main harness at the transfer case.
    2. Release the retaining clips.
    3. Remove the ground strap.

  52. NOTE: Two technicians are required to carry out this step.
  53. Position the instrument panel to gain access to the door harness electrical connector.
  54. Disconnect the door harness electrical connector.
  55. NOTE: Two technicians are required to carry out this step.
  56. Remove the instrument panel.
    • If necessary, transfer the components to the new instrument panel.
  57. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
