Component Tests: Relays

  1. Connect ohmmeter between relay coil terminals No. 1 and 2, reading should be 100-150 ohms. See Fig 1 . Connect ohmmeter between terminals No. 3 and 4, continuity should exist. Connect ohmmeter between terminals No. 3 and 5, no continuity should exist.
  2. To test coil-contacts, all circuits should be open between terminal No. 1 and terminals 3, 4 and 5. Disconnect ohmmeter and connect terminals No. 2 and 3 to 12 volts. Connect terminal No. 1 to ground. Measure voltage between terminals No. 5 and 1. If 12 volts does not exist, replace relay.
  3. If 12 volts exists, disconnect voltage from terminal No. 2 and measure voltage between terminals No. 1 and 4. If 12 volts exists, relay is good. If 12 volts does not exist, replace relay.
