System Fill

WARNING: Do not mix oil types. Any mixture or any unapproved oil could lead to seal deterioration and leaks. A leak could ultimately cause loss of fluid, which could result in a power steering assist.
  1. Fill the power steering reservoir to the full cold or remote reservoir center mark. Use Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX meeting Ford specification MERCON® or equivalent.
  2. Remove the fuel pump relay located in the battery junction box to disable the vehicle from starting. See Figure-Figure .
  3. Crank the engine for 30 seconds, check fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
  4. Raise the front wheels off the floor.
  5. NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel at the stops.
  6. Crank the engine for 30 seconds while cycling the steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. CAUTION: Do not overfill the power steering fluid reservoir.
  9. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the appropriate level. Use Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX meeting Ford specification MERCON® or equivalent.
  10. Install the fuel pump relay.
  11. Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)that may be set in the PCM. See 2000 SELF-DIAGNOSTICS -- EEC-V (GASOLINE) or 2001 SELF-DIAGNOSTICS -- EEC-V -- CNG & GASOLINE article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE .
  12. Purge the system of air. See PURGING SYSTEM OF AIR .
