Starter Does Not Crank Or Relay Clicks
- Inspect battery terminals for loose or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If battery terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Load test battery for 15 seconds at approximately one-half cold cranking amperage rating. Voltage should remain at more than 9.6 volts at 72°F (22°C). If battery voltage is as specified, go to next step. If battery voltage is not as specified, recharge battery and perform load test. If battery voltage is still not as specified, replace battery and check system operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect starter 1-pin terminal "S" connector (Black/Red wire). On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, place transmission in Park or Neutral. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, fully depress clutch pedal. Turn ignition switch to START position while measuring voltage between starter terminal "S" connector and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, if battery voltage is not present, go to step 5 . On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, if battery voltage is not present, go to step 9 .
- Perform STARTER GROUND CIRCUIT TEST under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If ground circuit does not check okay, repair or replace ground cable or connections and check system operation. If ground circuit checks okay, perform VOLTAGE DROP TEST under ON-VEHICLE TESTING.
- Inspect Transmission Range (TR) sensor and transmission shift linkage adjustment and adjust if necessary. See TR SENSOR under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust as necessary. If adjustment is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TR sensor connector. Turn ignition switch to START position while measuring voltage between TR sensor harness connector terminal No. 9 (Red wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check circuit between ignition switch and TR sensor for open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair wiring as necessary. If circuit is okay, test ignition switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - ESCORT & TRACER article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Measure resistance between TR sensor connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Red wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace TR sensor and check system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect starter motor terminal "S" connector (Black/Red wire). Measure resistance between Black wire at terminal "S" connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Red wire between connector and TR sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace starter motor. See STARTER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check system operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect clutch start switch connector, (located at top of clutch pedal). Measure voltage between clutch start switch connector terminal (Red/White wire) and ground with ignition in START position. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open or high resistance in circuit between clutch start switch and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Check system operation.
- Measure resistance between clutch start switch terminals while fully depressing clutch pedal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace clutch start switch and check system operation.
- Disconnect starter motor terminal "S" connector (Black/Red wire). Measure resistance between Black wire at terminal "S" connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Red wire between terminal "S" connector and clutch start switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace starter motor. See STARTER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check system operation.
