Component Tests: Relays
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, 2000 Ford Explorer, 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, and 1999 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Same test procedure may be used for all wiper/washer system relays.
- Remove relay to be tested. Measure resistance between relay terminal No. 2 and all other terminals. See Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms between relay terminal No. 2 and any other terminal, replace relay. If all resistances are 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Connect a jumper wire between battery positive terminal and relay terminal No. 3. See Fig 1 . Measure voltage between ground and relay terminal No. 4. If battery voltage is not present, replace relay. If battery voltage is present, go to next step.
- Connect a second jumper wire from battery positive terminal to relay terminal No. 1. Connect a third jumper wire between relay terminal No. 2. Measure voltage between ground and relay terminal No. 5. If battery voltage is not present, replace relay, If battery voltage is present, relay is okay.
