Throttle Pressure Test

  1. Block wheels. Connect tachometer to engine. Connect appropriate pressure gauge to throttle pressure port (square head plug, marked "T"). See Figure .
  2. Run engine until normal operating temperature is obtained. Ensure engine is idling within specification. Refer to underhood emissions label. Shift transaxle into "OD". Firmly apply brake pedal. Steadily increase engine RPM to WOT, and record pressure. Release accelerator. DO NOT allow engine to operate at full stall speed for more than 5 seconds.
  3. Throttle pressure should be 7.2-16 psi (50-110 kPa) at idle and 59-74 psi (410-510 kPa) at stall speed. If throttle valve pressure is not within specification, inspect throttle cable. Ensure cable moves freely and is correctly adjusted. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  4. If throttle cable is okay, inspect throttle valve and pressure regulator valve. Repair or replace as needed. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
