General Procedures: Fill
WARNING:
Do not mix fluid types. Any mixture or any unapproved fluid could lead to seal deterioration and leaks. A leak could ultimately cause loss of fluid, which could result in a loss of power steering assist.
- Fill the power steering reservoir to the appropriate level.
- Use Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX meeting Ford specification MERCON or equivalent.
- Remove the ignition coil fuse number 7 in the fuse junction panel to disable the engine from starting.
- Raise the front wheels off the floor.
- Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop while cranking the engine.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the appropriate level.
- Use Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX meeting ford specification MERCON or equivalent.
- Install the ignition coil fuse number 7 in the fuse junction panel.
- Clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs); refer to
CLEARING CODES
.
- Run the vehicle and check the system for leaks.
CAUTION:
Do not operate the starter motor for more than 10 seconds at a time. Damage to the starter motor could result.
CAUTION:
Do not overfill the power steering fluid reservoir.
NOTE:
If the power steering is noisy and accompanied by evidence of aerated fluid it will be necessary to purge the power steering system; refer to
PURGING .
