In-Vehicle Repair: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the battery tray and detach the ground cable.
    1. Unclip and disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Unclip the wiring harness.
    3. Remove the bolts.
    4. Detach the positive and negative cables.

  3. Remove the air cleaner housing.
    1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
    2. Detach the air cleaner outlet pipe.
    • Remove the air cleaner housing from the rubber bushing.

  4. Remove the air cleaner intake pipe.

  5. Remove the electrical ignition (EI) coil.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Remove the bolts and position the EI coil.

  6. Disconnect the fresh air and positive crankcase ventilation hoses.

  7. Remove the valve cover.

  8. Remove the rocker arms.

  9. NOTE: Keep the valve tappets in order for reassembly.
  10. Remove the valve tappets.
    1. Remove the valve tappet guide plate retainers.
    2. Remove the valve tappet guide plates.
    3. Remove the valve tappets.

  11. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, refer to TIMING BELT .
  12. Remove the camshaft oil seal. For additional information, refer to CAMSHAFT SEAL .
  13. Using the special tools, support the engine.

  14. Remove the engine rear mounting.

  15. Detach the air cleaner housing bracket and position it to one side.

  16. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.

  17. Remove and discard the blanking plug from the rear of the cylinder head.

  18. Remove the camshaft from the rear of the cylinder head.
