Sun And Shell Assembly - Disassembly: Disassembly

  1. Remove the front sun shell.

  2. Remove the No. 11 needle bearing.

  3. Remove the intermediate clutch hub.

  4. Remove the No. 10 thrust bearing.

  5. Remove the overdrive drum.

  6. Disassemble the low one-way clutch assembly.
    1. Remove the lower cap.
    2. Remove the low one-way clutch outer race.
    3. Remove the low one-way clutch assembly.
    4. Remove the upper cap.

  7. NOTE: The low one-way clutch assembly must be assembled in a specific order.
  8. Assemble the low one-way clutch.
    1. The lower cap lip must face up.
    2. The low one-way clutch outer race groove must face up.
    3. The low one-way clutch shoulder must face up.
    4. The upper cap lip must face down.

  9. CAUTION: The outer race must rotate counterclockwise. Make sure end caps are fully seated.
  10. Install the low one-way clutches as an assembly with the groove facing up.
    1. The groove in the one way clutch outer race must face up.
    2. The one way clutch outer race must rotate counterclockwise.

  11. Remove the No. 6 thrust washer.

  12. CAUTION: Pry evenly and do not locate screwdriver ends on or near forward clutch check ball to prevent component damage.

  13. Remove the forward clutch assembly.
  14. Remove the direct one-way clutch and the No. 7 thrust washer.

  15. Using the special tool remove the intermediate and direct clutch hub O-ring seals.

  16. Disassemble, clean and inspect the direct one-way clutch, inner and outer races.

  17. CAUTION: The circular depressions on the top of the nylon cage must be visible when installed on the inner race or damage to the direct one-way clutch may result.
    NOTE: Outer race must rotate clockwise.

  18. Assemble the one-way clutch.
  19. The outer race must rotate clockwise and lockup and hold when rotated counterclockwise.

  20. Inspect the direct one-way clutch.
    1. The circular depressions on the roller pockets of the nylon cage should face up.
    2. The reaction ear in the cage must match the hook in the inner race cam.
