Fuel Tank Draining

WARNING: Before performing any fuel system related procedure, read and follow fuel system safety precautions. See FUEL SYSTEM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
NOTE: Special tools required: Fuel Storage Tanker (164-R3202) or equivalent, Fuel Tank Drain Hose (310-102; includes guide tube) and Fuel Tank Lock Ring Wrench (310-069). See Fig 1-Fig 3 .
  1. Lower the windows and remove the hard top or lower the convertible top.
  2. Disconnect battery. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  3. NOTE: This step will only drain 1/8 of the fuel when tank is full.
  4. Install the Fuel Tank Drain Hose (310-102) by:
    • Removing the fuel tank filler cap and inserting the guide tube into the filler neck. See Figure.
    • Inserting the chamfered end of the fuel tank drain hose into the filler neck through the guide tube. Insert the fuel tank drain hose until the stop contacts the guide tube. If the stop does not contact the guide tube, remove the fuel tank drain hose and repeat the procedure.
    • Attaching the fuel storage tanker to the fuel tank drain hose and removing the fuel.
    • Remove the fuel tank drain hose and guide tube.
  5. Pull out on the inboard edge of the rear speaker grills to release the retaining clips and remove the rear speaker grills (left and right sides). Pull out on the rear trim panels to release the retaining clips and remove the rear trim panels (left and right sides). Fig 4.
  6. Position the rear carpeting and any insulation padding covering the fuel module access cover aside.
  7. Remove the Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) and fuel transfer pump module access cover. See Figure.
  8. Disconnect the connector from the fuel transfer pump module.
  9. Loosen the right fuel tank support strap approximately one inch. See Figure.
  10. Loosen the left fuel tank support strap approximately one inch. See Figure.
  11. Using the Fuel Tank Lock Ring Wrench (310-069), remove the fuel transfer pump lock ring. See Figure.
  12. Using the hand pump fuel storage tank and fuel drain hose, drain the fuel from the drivers side of the fuel tank. See Figure.
  13. Disconnect the connector from the FDM.
  14. Using the fuel tank lock ring wrench, remove the fuel transfer pump lock ring. See Figure
  15. Using the hand pump fuel storage tank and fuel drain hose, drain the fuel from the passenger side of the fuel tank. See Figure.
