Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

- Clockspring is located on steering column between steering wheel and combination switch. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Leave negative battery cable disconnected.
- Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Apply 2 strips of masking tape across clockspring to prevent accidental rotation. See Fig 1 .
- Loosen, but DO NOT remove 4 steering column retaining nuts and lower steering column slightly. Be careful not to stretch transmission shift indicator cable when column is lowered. Pull straight out and separate right and left finish panels from instrument panel. Disconnect headlight switch, dimmer and low tire warning system reset switch connectors from finish panel.
- Remove 3 screws and lower steering column shroud. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using small drift, push upward on ignition switch cylinder release tab while pulling outward on ignition lock cylinder. See Fig 2 . Remove ignition lock cylinder. Position shift lever in lowest position.
- Remove 4 screws and instrument cluster finish panel. Place shift lever in PARK position. Remove upper steering column shroud. Remove passive anti-theft system transmitter retaining screw and transmitter. Remove key-in ignition switch. Disconnect 2 clockspring connectors and remove from steering column bracket. Remove clockspring wire harness from steering column wire holders. Pry 3 clockspring clips loose. See Fig 3 . Remove clockspring from steering column.
