Steering Gear: Installation

NOTE: New O-ring seals must be installed any time the lines are disconnected from the steering gear.
  1. Install a new high pressure hose O-ring seal (3F886-AA) and a new return hose O-ring seal (3F886-BA).
  2. CAUTION: Make sure the pressure valve is correctly located in the valve body.

  3. Install the steering gear.
  4. NOTE: Visually inspect the floor seal before installation. Make sure the sealing surface of the floor seal is clean and not permanently deformed. The foam portion of the floor seal should be between 20-25 mm. Install a new floor seal if below the specified value.

  5. Install the steering column coupling shaft and floor seal.
  6. Using the special tools, align the crossmember.
    1. Insert the guide pins through the crossmember aligning holes.
    2. Slide the locking plates into the grooves and tighten the guide pin sleeve.
    3. Raise the crossmember, engaging the guide pins into the chassis aligning holes.

  7. Install the crossmember bolts.

  8. Remove the transmission jack.
  9. Remove the subframe alignment pins.
  10. Install the power steering hoses.
    1. Rotate the clamp plate.
    2. Install the bolt.

  11. Install the hose support clamp.

  12. Install the steering gear heat shield.

  13. Install the support insulator to transaxle center bolt.

  14. Connect the fluid cooler hose.

  15. Install the stabilizer bar links to the strut and spring assemblies.

  16. WARNING: Install new tie-rod end retaining nuts. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

  17. Install the tie-rod ends.
  18. Install the wheels.

  19. CAUTION: Make sure the steering is in the straight-ahead position, before lowering the vehicle.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. WARNING: Install a new clamp bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

  22. Connect the steering column coupling shaft to the steering gear pinion extension.
  23. Install the instrument panel lower panel.
    1. Secure the fastener.
    2. Install the screws.

  24. Fill the system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  25. If a new steering gear has been installed, check the toe adjustment. For additional information, refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES .
