Front Seat Backrest: Disassembly
WARNING:
Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an airbag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING:
Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
- Remove the driver seat. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT .
- Remove the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT BACKREST .
- Remove the headrest.
- Unclip the J-clip.
- Remove the lower row of hog rings.
- Reach a hand under the trim cover and separate the hook and loop strips.
- Peel the seat back trim cover upward in an inside out fashion to expose the lower row of hog rings.
- Remove the lower row of hog rings.
- Peel the seat back trim cover upward in an inside out fashion to expose the top row of hog rings.
- Reach a hand under the trim cover and separate the hook and loop strips.
- Peel the seat back trim cover upward in an inside out fashion to expose the top row of hog rings.
- Unclip the J-clip.
- Remove the headrest guide pins.
- Remove the upholstery from the pad.
- Remove the side air bag wiring harness pin-type retainer from the side of the seat back frame.
- Remove the frame from the pad.
- Remove the air bag wiring harness pushpins.
- Remove the nuts and the side air bag module.
- Remove the seat backrest lumbar support.
WARNING:
To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
The front impact severity sensor is located on the hood latch support bracket.
The side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the B-pillar.
To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

Use care when separating the seat back trim cover from the hook and loop strip, or the hook and loop strip can be torn from the seat back foam.

Taurus has only one row of hog rings.

If the pin-type retainers are damaged, install new retainers. This will keep the wiring harness routed correctly.
