Engine and Radiator Flushing

- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING in this article.
- Remove the coolant thermostat.
- Install the coolant hose connection without the coolant thermostat.
- Use an appropriate cooling system flusher to flush the engine and radiator.
Use Motorcraft Cooling System Flush or equivalent.
- Install the coolant thermostat. For additional information, refer to THERMOSTAT - 5.4L, 6.8L in this article.
- Backflush the heater core if necessary. For additional information, refer to HEATER CORE BACKFLUSHING in this article.
- Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING in this article.
WARNING:
To avoid personal injury, do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap while the engine is operating or hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly.
Once pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.
