Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly
CAUTION:
Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. They must be exchanged with the same part number or an equivalent part if an exchange is necessary. Do not use an alternative part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure these parts are correctly retained.
NOTE:
Make sure the steering wheel is in the UNLOCKED position.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly. For additional information, refer to SHOCK ABSORBER AND SPRING ASSEMBLY in this article.
- For reference during assembly, make an index mark on the mount, spring and shock.
- Using a suitable spring compressor, compress the spring until the tension is released from the shock absorber.
- Remove the shock and spring assembly shaft nut.
- Position a suitable pass-through socket wrench onto the strut shaft nut.
- Place a 10-mm 6 point deep well socket on top of the strut shaft.
- Remove the strut shaft while holding the nut in place.
- To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
- If installing a new spring, make sure the part number is correct. For additional information, refer to the vehicle certification (VC) label for the correct spring code. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING to convert the spring code to the correct part number.
- To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.
- Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary. For additional information, refer to SUSPENSION SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
