Steering Gear: Assembly

If a new steering gear is being installed, mount the steering gear in the special tool.

CAUTION: Hold the steering gear rack with an adjustable wrench when installing the inner tie rods to absorb the rotational force. Damage to the steering gear can occur.

Install the inner tie rods.
- Tighten to 100 Nm (74 lb-ft).

NOTE: Inspect the bellow boots. Install new bellows boots if torn or cracked.

Position new inner clamps on the bellows boots.

NOTE: To prevent the bellows boots from twisting during toe adjustment, apply long-life grease to the groove in the inner tie rods and uniformly to the inner diameter of the tie-rod bellows.

Position both bellows boots and the air tube on the steering gear. Make sure the air tube is correctly inserted into the bellows boots.
Using the special tool, tighten the bellows boot inner clamps.

Install the bellows boot outer clamps and the tie-rod jam nut.

Install the power steering hose bracket and the bolts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

Remove the steering gear with the special tools.
Install the bolts using a plastic or rubber mallet.
