Pinpoint Test

  1. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT AND RIGHT MOVEMENT
    1. Ignition ON.
    2. Operate the Left Hand (LH) and Right Hand (RH) exterior mirrors in the left and right direction using the exterior mirror control switch.
      • Do both exterior mirrors move left and right? 
      • Yes:  GO to step 2 .
      • No:  GO to step  7 .
  2. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN MOTOR
    NOTE: The following step uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test light recommended in the Special Tools table at the beginning of this section. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Flex Probe Kit for the test light probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test light probe directly on any connector.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Incorrectly Operating Right Hand (RH) Exterior Mirror or Left Hand (LH) Exterior Mirror.
    3. Ignition ON.
    4. Select the incorrectly operating mirror on the exterior mirror control switch.
    5. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, while using the exterior mirror control switch in the up, down and released positions, monitor:

    6. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, while using the exterior mirror control switch in the up, down and released positions, monitor:

      • Did the test light illuminate in the up and down position and not illuminate in the released position? 
      • Yes:  CHECK the inoperative exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motor for open circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new exterior mirror. REFER to EXTERIOR MIRROR . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror motor. REFER to EXTERIOR MIRROR MOTOR .
      • No:  GO to step 3 .
  3. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C535A (base mirrors).
    3. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C504 (heated mirrors).
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    6. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is any voltage present? 
      • Yes:  REPAIR the circuit.
      • No:  GO to step 4 .
  4. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    3. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      • Yes:  For vehicles with base mirrors, GO to step 5 .

        For vehicles with heated mirrors, GO to step  6 .

      • No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. CHECK THE BASE EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    2. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
      • Yes:  INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch (integral to the master window control switch). REFER to WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH .
      • No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. CHECK THE HEATED EXTERIOR MIRROR UP/DOWN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    2. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
      • Yes:  INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch (integral to the master window control switch). REFER to WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH .
      • No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  7. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT MOTOR
    NOTE: The following step uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test light recommended in the Special Tools table at the beginning of this section.     1. Ignition OFF.

    4. Select the incorrectly operating mirror on the exterior mirror control switch.
    5. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, while using the exterior mirror control switch in the right, left and released positions, monitor:

    6. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, while using the exterior mirror control switch in the right, left and released positions, monitor:

      • Did the test light illuminate in the right and left position and not illuminate in the released position? 
      • Yes:  CHECK the inoperative exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motor for open circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new exterior mirror. REFER to EXTERIOR MIRROR . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror motor. REFER to EXTERIOR MIRROR MOTOR .
      • No:  GO to step 3 .
  8. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C535A (base mirrors).
    3. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C504 (heated mirrors).
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    6. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is any voltage present? 
      • Yes:  REPAIR the circuit.
      • No:  GO to step 9 .
  9. CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    3. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      • Yes:  For vehicles with base mirrors, GO to step 10 .

        For vehicles with heated mirrors, GO to step  11 .

      • No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  10. CHECK THE BASE EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    2. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
      • Yes:  INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch (integral to the master window control switch). REFER to WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH .
      • No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. CHECK THE HEATED EXTERIOR MIRROR LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. For incorrectly operating Left Hand (LH) mirror, measure:

    2. For incorrectly operating Right Hand (RH) mirror, measure:

      • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
      • Yes:  INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch (integral to the master window control switch). REFER to WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH .
      • No:  REPAIR the circuit.
