Power Transfer Unit (PTU): Removal

  1. Remove the Right Hand (RH) halfshaft. REFER to HALFSHAFT - RH, ALL WHEEL DRIVE (AWD) .
  2. Remove the RH  catalytic converter. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
  3. Remove the exhaust flexible pipe. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
  4. NOTE: To maintain the initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the driveshaft flange and the output flange.

    Remove the 4 driveshaft-to-output flange bolts, then disconnect the driveshaft from the output flange. Position the driveshaft aside.

  5. If equipped with PTU  cooling, drain the cooling system. REFER to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
  6. Remove the PTU  support bracket.
    • Remove the 2 PTU  support bracket-to-Power Transfer Unit (PTU) bolts.
    • Remove the 3 PTU  support bracket-to-engine bolts.
  7. Position the engine roll restrictor aside.
    • Remove the 2 engine roll restrictor-to-transaxle bolts and the engine roll restrictor bracket.
    • Loosen the rear engine roll restrictor bolt and pivot the engine roll restrictor downward.
  8. If equipped, disconnect the PTU  vent hose.
  9. If equipped, disconnect the PTU  cooling sensor.

  11. If equipped, remove the RH turbocharger oil return line. Refer to appropriate step in REMOVAL .
  12. Remove and discard the 2 steering gear bolts. Position the steering gear aside.

  13. Remove and discard the 4 front subframe bracket bolts.

  14. Remove and discard the 2 front subframe rearward bolts and remove the front subframe brackets.

  15. NOTE: Position a drain pan under the vehicle.

    Remove the 5 PTU  bolts and pull the PTU  outward and separate it from the transaxle. Rotate the output flange upward, then turn it and remove the PTU  from the vehicle.

  16. Using a small screwdriver, remove and discard the compression seal.
