Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

With the ignition ON, the PSCM sends messages to the ABS module over the HS-CAN 2. If the ABS module does not receive these messages within a certain time frame, the ABS module sets a DTC. For information on the messages sent to the ABS module by the PSCM, refer to the Network Message Chart within the Description and Operation in  ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) AND STABILITY CONTROL  .

PPT AE ABS MODULE DTC FAULT TRIGGER CONDITIONS

DTC Description Fault Trigger Conditions
U0131:00 Lost Communication With Power Steering Control Module: No Sub Type Information Sets when the ABS module detects any of the steering wheel data messages is missing from the PSCM.
U0420:00 Invalid Data Received From Power Steering Control Module: General Checksum Failure Sets in the ABS module if the steering angle count checksum received from the PSCM does not match the one calculated for more 2 times.
U0420:41 Invalid Data Received From Power Steering Control Module: No Sub Type Information Sets in the ABS module if the steering torque signal checksum received from the PSCM does not match the one calculated for more 2 times.
U0420:82 Invalid Data Received From Power Steering Control Module: Alive/Sequence Counter Incorrect/Not Updated Sets in the ABS module if the steering angle rolling counter received from the PSCM has not updated for 3 continuous loops.
U0420:86 Invalid Data Received From Power Steering Control Module: Signal Invalid Sets in the ABS module if the steering wheel angle sensor signal is invalid.

  1. AE1: CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Press the Read Vehicle Information button to view the results of the modules communicating on the network.
    • Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs.
    • Does the PSCM pass the Network Test?
      Yes No
Go to  AE2. DIAGNOSE the PSCM does not communicate with the diagnostic scan tool. REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
  2. AE2: RECHECK THE ABS MODULE DTCS
    • Carry out the ABS self-test.
    • Clear the ABS DTCs.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Carry out the ABS self-test.
    • Is DTC U0131:00 or U0420:xx retrieved again?
      Yes No
Go to  AE3. The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  3. AE3: CHECK FOR ABS MODULE VOLTAGE CONCERN DTCS
    • Review the results from the recorded ABS module self-test.
    • Is DTC U3003:16 or U3003:17 present?
      Yes No
For DTC U3003:16, Go to PINPOINT TEST A .
For DTC U3003:17, Go to PINPOINT TEST F .
      Go to  AE4.
  4. AE4: CHECK THE PSCM FOR DTCS
    • Carry out the PSCM self-test.
    • Are any PSCM DTCs present?
      Yes No
DIAGNOSE the PSCM DTC. REFER to POWER STEERING SYSTEM . Go to  AE5.
  5. AE5: CHECK FOR OTHER CAUSES OF COMMUNICATION NETWORK CONCERN
NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration can be incorrectly set during the PMI or the PMI may not have been carried out.
    • Check the vehicle service history for recent service actions related to the PSCM or ABS module. If recent service history is found:
      • Verify the correct replacement module was installed - HVBOM may be used to verify correct part fitment.
      • Verify the configuration of replacement module was correct - re-configure the module using as-built data if prior configuration is suspect.
      • Verify the module was not obtained from a like vehicle and installed into customer vehicle - return the swapped module to source vehicle and obtain new replacement module.
    • Operate the system and determine if the observable symptom is still present.
    • Is the observable symptom still present?
      Yes No
Go to  AE6. The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been due to incorrect parts replacement procedures or incorrect module configuration.
  6. AE6: CHECK FOR LOST COMMUNICATION DTCS SET IN OTHER MODULES
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs.
    • Is DTC U0131:xx or U0420:xx set in 1 or more modules in addition to the ABS module?
      Yes No
Go to  AE7. Go to  AE8.
  7. AE7: CHECK FOR CORRECT PSCM OPERATION
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PSCM_A connector disconnected. (C1436B)
    • PSCM_B connector disconnected. (C1463A)
NOTE: The battery must be removed to access the ABS module electrical connector.
    • Remove the battery. REFER to GENERAL PROCEDURES .
    • ABS Module connector disconnected. (C135)
    • Disconnect all in-line electrical connectors between the ABS module and the PSCM.
    • Using a good light source, inspect all disconnected electrical connectors for the following:
      • corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary
    • Connect all in-line electrical connectors between the ABS module and the PSCM. Make sure the connectors seat and latch correctly.
    • ABS Module connector connected. (C135) Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.
    • PSCM_B connector connected. (C1463A) Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.
