Steering Column: Removal

All vehicles 

1. Remove the steering column shrouds. Refer to: Steering Column Shrouds .
2. Remove the clockspring. Refer to: Clockspring .
3. Remove the bolts and the steering column reinforcement panel.

   Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

   Vehicles with selector lever 

4. Disconnect the electrical connector.

5. Remove the screw and the selector lever.

   Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

6. NOTE: Do not pull or pry on the selector lever cable or the selector lever cable end may be damaged. Use a screwdriver and turn the screwdriver as shown to pry the cable end off the post as close to the post as possible.

   Using a screwdriver, pry the selector lever cable end from the selector lever mechanism.

7. Release the selector lever cable retaining clip tabs and remove the selector lever cable from the bracket.

   Vehicles with power adjustable steering column 

8. 1. Release the wiring harness retainers.
   2. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.

   All vehicles 

9. Depress the locking tabs and disconnect the collapsible steering column module electrical connector.

10. NOTE: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering column.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

11. NOTE: Do not reuse steering column bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the steering column bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

12. NOTE: Do not reuse steering column bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the bolts and remove the steering column.
