Steering Column Shaft: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
NOTE: Vehicle with power adjustable steering column shown, all others similar.
  1. NOTE: Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected or damage to the steering column internal sensor may result.
    NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent).

    Keep the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.

  2. Remove the steering column shrouds. Refer to: Steering Column Shrouds .
  3. Remove the bolts and the steering column reinforcement panel.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  4. NOTE: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering column.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  5. Remove the dust shield nuts.

    Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  6. NOTE: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  7. Remove the steering column shaft.
