Pinpoint Test P: Control Module Failure

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The CHCM set a control module failure DTC when an internal failure has been detected.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    CHCM U3000:45 Control Module: Program Memory Failure Sets when the CHCM detects an internal fault.
    CHCM U3000:46 Control Module: Calibration/Parameter Memory Failure Sets when the CHCM detects certain calibration parameters are Invalid / Incompatible Configuration.
    CHCM U3000:47 Control Module: Watchdog/Safety μC Failure Sets when the CHCM detects an internal electronic failure.
    CHCM U3000:48 Control Module: Supervision Software Failure Sets when the CHCM detects an internal failure.
    CHCM U3000:49 Control Module: Internal Electronic Failure Sets when the CHCM detects an internal failure.

    Possible Sources 

    • CHCM

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify BJB fuse 158 (10A) is OK.
    • Verify BJB fuse 66 (10A) is OK.

  2. P1 CHECK DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTCS) AND PERFORM SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, read all the CHCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    • Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    • Cycle the ignition from ON - OFF - ON.

    • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Repeat the CHCM self-test.

    Is any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present ' 

    Yes  If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) 3003:16 or U3003:17 present resolve them first - REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart  in this information. For Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) U3000:45, U3000:46, U3000:47, U3000:48 or U3000:49, GO to  P2
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been falsely set by the CHCM causing the signal to momentarily stop and set the DTC.
  3. P2 CHECK THE IGNITION SUPPLY AND THE STABILIZER BAR DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BJB C1035B.

    • Disconnect CHCM C445.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is any voltage present ' 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  P3
  4. P3 CHECK THE IGNITION ON AND THE STABILIZER BAR DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  P4
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. P4 CHECK THE IGNITION ON AND THE STABILIZER BAR DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  P5
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. P5 CHECK CHCM (CHASSIS CONTROL MODULE) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Disconnect CHCM C445.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  P6
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  7. P6 CHECK THE CHCM (CHASSIS CONTROL MODULE) POWER AND IGNITION VOLTAGE SUPPLY

    • Disconnect CHCM C445.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:

    Measure and record the battery voltage (VBAT) at the battery terminals. 

    Measure the input supply voltage at the CHCM. 

    Is the CHCM voltage supply outside VBAT +/- 0.5V? 

    Yes  GO to  P7
    No  VERIFY BJB fuse 158 (10A) IS OK. If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If OK, INSTALL a new BJB.
  8. P7 CHECK THE VOLTAGE FOR THE STABILIZER BAR DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT

    • Disconnect CHCM C445.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:

      LH side - Rod side 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage above 9 volts ' 

    Yes  GO to  P8
    No  VERIFY BJB fuse 66 (10A) IS OK. If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If OK, INSTALL a new BJB.
  9. P8 CHECK THE DIRECTIONAL CONTROL VALVE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect CHCM C445.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:

      Directional control valve - LH

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  P9
  10. P9 CHECK THE DIRECTIONAL CONTROL VALVE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  P10
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. P10 CHECK THE DIRECTIONAL CONTROL VALVE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Disconnect Directional control valve - LH C1295B and Directional control valve - RH C1294B.

    • Measure:

      Directional control valve - LH

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  P11
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  12. P11 CHECK THE DIRECTIONAL CONTROL VALVE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    • Measure:

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  P12
    No  REPAIR the affected circuit.
  13. P12 CHECK THE DIRECTIONAL CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE RESISTANCE AT THE CONNECTOR PINS

    • Measure:

    Is the resistance between 1 and 5 Ohm? 

    Yes  CLEAR all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to  P14
    No  GO to  P13
  14. P13 CHECK FOR CORRECT FRONT STABILIZER BAR DISCONNECT SYSTEM OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the directional control valve - LH and directional control valve - RH electrical connector (if not previously disconnected).

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the directional control valve - LH and directional control valve - RH electrical connectors. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new front stabilizer bar disconnect assembly. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar Disconnect . TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to  P14
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  15. P14 INSPECT CHASSIS CONTROL MODULE (CHCM) CONNECTORS/TERMINALS AND CHECK OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the CHCM electrical connectors (if not previously disconnected).

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the CHCM electrical connectors. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new CHCM. REFER to: Chassis Control Module (CHCM) 
    Test the system for normal operation. If the issue is still not resolved, contact the Ford Technical Assistance Center.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
