Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Disconnect VSS harness connector. Using DVOM, set DVOM to AC scale. Connect DVOM between VSS terminals "A" and "B". Raise drive vehicle wheels. Operate engine at idle and place transmission in gear. Ensure driveshaft is rotating . If voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage reading is not greater than 0.5 volt, go to step 6.
- Check for open in VSS high circuit and VCM. If circuit is open, go to step 11. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Check for open in VSS low circuit between sensor and VCM. If circuit is open, go to step 11. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Check for short to ground in VSS high circuit between sensor and VCM. If circuit is shorted, go to step 11. If circuit is okay, go to step 9.
- Remove VSS. Check vehicle speed sensor rotor for damage or misalignment. If a problem is found, go to step 8. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Replace VSS. After replacing sensor, go to step 13.
- Repair or replace VSS rotor as necessary. After replacing VSS rotor, go to step 13.
- Check for poor connection at VSS. If connection is faulty, go to step 11. If connection is okay, go to next step.
- Check for poor connection at VCM harness connector. If connection is faulty, go to next step. If connection is okay, go to step 12.
- Repair circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step 13.
- Replace VCM. Program replacement VCM using required equipment. After replacing VCM, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Using scan tool, select DTC, SPECIFIC function and enter DTC P0500. Operate vehicle within conditions required to set DTC. If scan tool displays RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display RAN AND PASSED, return to step 2.
- Using scan tool, select Read and Record INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, diagnose affected DTCs. If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
