This bulletin contains general instructions and does not specifically apply to other ECU Update TSBs.
Applicable Vehicles: All models
GENERAL ECU UPDATE SERVICE PROCEDURE
Ensure the vehicle 12V battery state-of-charge is sufficient prior to executing an ECU update. If the state-of-charge is below 12V, attach a battery charger to ensure an adequate voltage level for reliable update results.
An insufficient vehicle battery charge may result in a failure when updating and result in damage to the ECU which may cause the claim to be denied.
Information
Turn OFF all lights (Turn OFF headlight switch auto mode) and accessories (heater/air conditioner/fan, audio, heated seats, rear defroster, etc.) prior to the ECU Update to ensure the battery will NOT discharge.
Ignition is to remain ON during the entire ECU update process.
Do NOT start the engine or turn the ignition switch OFF during the update.
If the required event does NOT populate in the event list, then install the latest version of Genesis Smart.
To resolve issues with Genesis Smart, contact the GIT-America call center for support at: (888)-437-0308 .
GENESIS SMART VEHICLE CONNECTION
- Connect the VCI-II or VCI-III to the vehicle's DLC (located under the driver's side dash)
- Turn ignition ON
.
- Do NOT start the engine (for gasoline engine only - Non-EV).
- Do NOT place vehicle in "Ready Mode" (for EV).
- Launch the STUI application.
Connect to the VCI and wait for the VCI indicator light to turn green.
Launch Genesis Smart then select ECU Upgrade (A).
Information
The Genesis Smart application is accessed through STUI with an established VCI connection.
GDS AUTO MODE ECU UPDATE
- Select AUTO MODE
(A).
- Select the targeted system for the ECU update referencing directions in the specific TSB.
Information
Completing a scan of a system (B) will display its current ROM ID and the Latest ROM ID. If both Current ROM ID and Latest ROM ID match, the system is already updated to the most currently available version. If Latest ROM ID does NOT match Current ROM ID, the update icon (C) will be a selectable action.
It is recommended to record the previous and new ROM IDs for review should Manual ECU upgrade be required due to failure.
Refer to the ROM ID table and GDS
Event Description within specific TSBs.
Information
The ECU update has two stages:
- Tablet to VCI
- VCI to ECU
The VCI indicator light will change from green to purple once the ECU update is in progress.
NOTE: Do NOT remove the VCI from the OBD-II connector during an ECU update.
This will result in a failed update and may potentially cause damage to vehicle system modules.Once the update has been completed, follow the on-screen instructions for module reset and finalization.
- Example:
Turn ignition OFF for 10 seconds (D).
Then turn ignition ON and select OK (E).
NOTE: Failure to turn OFF the ignition for a sufficient amount of time may result in an inoperative vehicle.Information
- Use the countdown timer reset button.
- On-screen instructions may indicate to turn ignition OFF between 10-30 seconds, depending on the type of update.
- The screen will display SUCCESS
(F) once the ECU update is fully completed.
Information
- If the ECU update fails, the GDS will prompt to CLOSE or RETRY the ECU update (G).
- If the ECU update fails multiple times, proceed to the GDS Manual Mode ECU Update procedure.
- After ECU update is successful, execute Fault Code Searching
(H) for all systems and clear all DTCs that may have resulted from the ECU update process.
- Start the engine or place vehicle in "Ready Mode". Confirm there are no warning lights illuminated and ensure proper operation of the updated system(s).
GDS MANUAL MODE ECU UPDATE
Locate and use the ECU P/N from the vehicle's ECU label if the ROM ID table lacks information.
Document the Manual-Mode attempts to prevent chargebacks on claims.
To prevent damage to ECU modules, follow the specific ECU Update TSB and reference the ROM ID tables included for the appropriate calibrations and passwords.
- Select ECU Upgrade
(A) then MANUAL MODE
(B).
- Select the targeted system for the ECU update referencing the TSB content (for example, BMS
or ENGINE
).NOTE: Selecting incorrect event will corrupt the ECU and render the vehicle inoperable.
Information
For ECM, differentiation may occur based on model years (MY), vehicle type, engine, transmission, and whether the vehicle has an immobilizer (IMMO/+IMMO for vehicles equipped with SSB, or NON IMMO/-IMMO for vehicles with key ignition systems).
- Enter the 4-digit password (C) located within the specific TSB.
Select OK (D).
- Repeat steps 3 - 6 from the GDS Auto Mode ECU Update procedure.
