Steering Gear: Disassembly
- Place steering gear in vise between 2 pieces of wood or soft metal. Move dust boot clamps and boots. Using chisel, straighten staked part of lock washer between inner tie rod and rack. NEW lock washers must be installed on reassembly.
- Hold rack with wrench while unscrewing tie rod. Remove pipe assemblies between valve housing and cylinder. Remove adjusting plug nut, adjusting plug, spring, and plunger. See Figure .
- Rotate pinion gear until flat on pinion gear splines is parallel or aligned with rack. Record dimension "A" for use on reassembly. See Fig 1 . Remove valve housing, valve assembly and pinion shaft. Noting number of shims, remove shims from steering housing.
- On right side of steering housing (side farthest from pinion shaft), remove steering rack and seal holder retaining ring. Insert small pin punch in hole drilled in side of housing to remove retaining ring.
- Carefully slide rack assembly and seal holder out of right side of steering housing. Remove inner rack seal and shock damper from inside of housing. Remove piston and "O" rings from rack.
- Using a plastic hammer, drive valve assembly from valve housing. Press bearing and seal from valve housing. Remove snap ring from spool end of valve assembly. Slide spool, seals and spacer off of shaft. DO NOT remove Teflon seals; valve is serviced as an assembly only.
