Power Steering Pump: Inspection

  1. Check power steering pump housing, shaft and pulley for cracks, distortion, excessive wear or scoring. Check rotor and vanes for excessive wear. If cracks or excessive wear are present, replace pump.
  2. Ensure flow control valve moves smoothly within its bore. Replace flow control valve if it binds or sticks. Flow control valve spring free length should be 1.28"-1.34" (32.5-34.0 mm). If flow control valve spring length is not within specification, replace spring.
  3. Check power steering flow control valve for leakage. Cover one fluid passage and apply 57-71 psi (4-5 Kg/cm2 ) air pressure to opposite passage. If there is air leakage at either end of flow control valve, replace flow control valve. If it is necessary to replace flow control valve, replacement control valve must have same letter marking as power steering pump front housing. An "A", "B", "C", "D", "E" or "F" will be stamped into power steering pump front housing.
  4. Clearance between power steering shaft and shaft bushing should be .0012"-.0020" (.03-.05 mm). If power steering shaft and shaft bushing clearance is greater than .0020" (.05 mm), replace power steering pump assembly.
  5. Rotor vane plate height is .339" (8.61 mm), length is .590" (14.99 mm) and thickness is .055" (1.40 mm). If any rotor vane plate thickness is less than specified, replace ALL rotor vane plates. Clearance between rotor and rotor vane plate should be .0014" (.036 mm). If rotor vane plate clearance is greater than specified, replace rotor and rotor vane plates according to numbers stamped on cam ring and rotor. See ROTOR VANE PLATE LENGTH REPLACEMENT  table.
