Steering Gear: Disassembly

  1. Mount rack and pinion in a soft-jawed vise. Remove right and left turn pressure pipes. Remove inner and outer boot clamps and slide boots toward tie rod ends. Unstake tie rod lock washers. Using Tie Rod Housing Wrench (J-35414) and Steering Rack End Wrench (J-35418), remove tie rods from steering rack.
  2. Using Lock Nut Wrench (J-35309-1), remove rack guide cap lock nut. Using Adjusting Plug (J-35309-2), remove rack guide cap, rack guide spring, rack guide and rack guide seat. Remove rack housing cap. Using Pinion Preload Socket (J-35428), remove control valve lock nut. Remove control valve housing. See Figure .
  3. Using Cylinder End Stopper Wrench (J-39901), turn cylinder end stopper until both ends of cylinder end stopper wire appear in slot on top of rack housing. Continue turning cylinder end stopper until the loose end of cylinder end stopper wire is fed out slot on top of rack housing. Remove cylinder end stopper wire and cylinder end stopper. See Figure .
  4. Install Rack Seal Protector (J-36595) over teeth on steering rack to protect inner rack seal. Remove steering rack, steering rack outer spacer and outer seal. Using Driver Handle (J-35434-2) and Rack Cylinder Seal Remover (J-35434-1), remove inner seal and spacer. Using a brass drift punch, remove control valve lower bearing. Using Control Valve Bearing Remover (J-39902), remove rack housing upper bearing. See Figure .
