Component Disassembly & Reassembly: Notes

Before disassembling mainshafts and countershaft, measure and record clearances listed in appropriate tables. If clearances are within specifications and no parts are defective, disassembly of shafts is unnecessary. When checking clearances, mainshaft and countershaft bearings must be removed from transaxle housing.

The mainshaft and countershaft (including bearings and, if equipped, fifth gear components) must be assembled and installed in clutch housing. Install mainshaft holder to prevent shafts from turning and shift transmission into gear. Torque countershaft and mainshaft lock nuts to 65 ft. lbs. (90 N.m). Remove shafts from housing and check clearances.

CAUTION: Incorrect gear clearances can be caused by overtightening the mainshaft or countershaft lock nuts. Ensure torque wrench used is correctly calibrated.
