Gear Box: Disassembly
- Remove control unit as previously described. Carefully clamp gear box in a vise. Loosen bands and pull boots away from end of gear box. Unbend tie rod lock washers. Unscrew tie rods.
- Push right end of rack back into cylinder housing to avoid damaging seal surface. Remove lock nut and remove rack guide screw. Remove snapring securing pinion lower ball bearing.
- Lightly tap pinion to remove it from gear housing. Remove snap ring separating pinion and lower ball bearing. Remove 4 bolts holding cylinder housing-to-gear housing. Slide cylinder housing off rack.
- Remove rack bushing, spring and end seal from cylinder housing. Remove cylinder seal retainer, cylinder cap and steering rack from gear housing. Remove retainer washer and "O" ring from cylinder end of gear housing.
- Remove pinion dust seal retainer bolts from gear housing and remove dust seal and "O" ring from retainer. Check upper pinion bearing for excessive play or contaminated grease.
- If replacement is necessary, remove snap ring and pinion holder from gear housing. Drive out bearing. Inspect needle bearings in pinion holder and gear housing for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
- Remove cylinder barrel and seal retainer from rack. Remove two "O" rings from cylinder cap on seal retainer. Remove "O" ring and snap ring from seal retainer. Slide cylinder cap off seal retainer.
- Carefully pry White cylinder end seal from seal retainer. Carefully remove piston ring from rack. Remove "O" ring, located under piston ring on rack.
