Shift Interlock System
- To check system operation, ensure shift lever is in Park. Turn ignition on. Depress brake pedal with accelerator pedal in idle position.
- If shift lock solenoid clicks, system is working properly. If shift lock solenoid fails to click, proceed to step 3). If shift lever cannot be moved from Park, check for proper installation of shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect 8-pin connector from interlock control unit. Interlock control unit is located behind left side of instrument panel, near kick panel. See Figure.
- Turn ignition on, and depress brake pedal. Using voltmeter, check voltage between White/Green wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Battery voltage should exist.
- With brake pedal still depressed, depress accelerator pedal. Ensure brake pedal and accelerator are held down at the same time. Check voltage between White/Green wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Voltage should be 5 volts or less.
- If voltage readings are as specified, go to step 8). If voltage readings are not as specified, check for defective No. 25 fuse (20-amp) in engine compartment fuse box. If fuse is okay, check for improperly adjusted throttle cable.
- Check for defective wiring. If wiring is okay, check for defective brakelight switch or throttle angle sensor. See BRAKELIGHT SWITCH and THROTTLE ANGLE SENSOR under COMPONENT TESTING. If all components are okay, substitute ATCU and recheck operation.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between Green/White wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Continuity should exist. If continuity exists, go to step 10).
- If continuity does not exist, check shift position console switch. See SHIFT POSITION CONSOLE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTING. If shift position console switch is okay, check for defective wiring or ground. Ground is located behind kick panel on driver side, near hood latch, or behind kick panel on passenger side.
- Ensure ignition is on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between Green wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Ensure battery voltage exists. If battery voltage exists, wiring circuit is okay.
- If battery voltage does not exist, check for defective No. 1 fuse (10-amp), located in fuse box on driver-side kick panel. Check for defective wiring circuit. If fuse and wiring circuit are okay, check shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID under COMPONENT TESTING.
