DTC P0501 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

NOTE: DTC P0501 indicates a malfunction in VSS circuit (A/T).
  1. Test-drive vehicle. Using scan tool, check vehicle speed. If correct speed is indicated, condition is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires between VSS sensor and PCM connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  section. Repair as necessary. If correct speed is not indicated, turn ignition off.
  2. Block rear wheels and set parking brake. Raise and support front of vehicle. Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel and slowly rotate left front wheel. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals A9 and C18. See Figure . If voltage pulses between zero and 5 volts, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM.
  3. If voltage does not pulse between zero and 5 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector "C". Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel and slowly rotate left front wheel. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals A9 and C18. If voltage pulses between zero and 5 volts, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM. If voltage does not pulse between zero and 5 volts, repair wire between PCM and VSS for a short or open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  section. If wire is okay, replace VSS.
