Ignition Timing: Prelude
- Start engine and run under no-load condition until cooling fan comes on. Let engine idle. Pull out service check connector (Blue, 2-pin), located behind front console. See Fig 1
. Plug SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100
) or jumper wire into service check connector.CAUTION: DO NOT attempt any connection to 3-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) located near service check connector.
- Attach tachometer to tachometer test connector (White, 2-pin with cover) located in left rear of engine compartment (Civic and Civic Del Sol) or right rear of engine compartment (Prelude). Check idle speed and adjust as necessary. See IDLE SPEED under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE . Connect timing light to spark plug wire No. 1. Check base ignition timing. On Civic and Civic Del Sol, timing marks are located on timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley. On Prelude, timing marks are located on flywheel/drive plate. On all models, Red mark indicates 15 degrees BTDC. White mark indicates TDC. See Fig 2 . See IGNITION TIMING .
- Loosen hold-down bolts and rotate distributor to adjust timing. On Civic and Civic Del Sol, tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m). On Prelude, tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 N.m). On all models, recheck timing.
- Remove timing light. Remove SCS service connector or jumper wire from ignition timing service check connector.
