Cruise Control Systems: Description

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

Cruise control system uses mechanically and electrically operated devices to maintain vehicle speed settings greater than 25 MPH. Cruise control unit receives command signals from cruise control main switch and cruise control SET/RESUME switch.

Cruise control unit compares actual vehicle speed from Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) to vehicle speed setting. It also can receive a disengage signal from either brakelight switch, clutch switch (M/T) or gear position switch (A/T). This disengage signal will release throttle control until cruise control operation is resumed.
