Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit: S2000

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect VSS 3-pin connector. VSS is located at left side of transmission. Check for continuity between ground and VSS 3-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Brown/Yellow wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Brown/Yellow wire between VSS and ground point located on engine block behind valve cover. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  2. Disconnect Throttle Position (TP) sensor 3-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and VSS 3-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Blue wire). If about 5 volts exist, go to next step. If about 5 volts do not exist, repair short in Yellow/Blue wire between VSS and PCM connectors or TP sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and VSS 3-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/White wire). If about 5 volts exist, go to next step. If about 5 volts do not exist, repair open or short to ground in Blue/White wire between VSS and PCM connectors or instrument cluster connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  4. Turn ignition off. Reconnect VSS 3-pin connector. Turn ignition on and place transmission in Neutral. Backprobing, measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector "C" (20-pin connector) terminal No. 3 (Blue/White wire) while slowly rotating propeller shaft. See Figure. If voltage toggles between zero and about 5 volts, replace printed circuit board in instrument cluster. If voltage does not toggle between zero and about 5 volts, replace VSS.
