Cruise Control Communication Circuit Troubleshooting

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Turn on the cruise control main switch, then drive the vehicle at speeds over 25 mph (40 km/h) with the cruise control.

    Does the cruise control operate?

    1. YES  -Go to step 3.
    2. NO  -Check the cruise control actuator (see Cruise Control Actuator Input Test  ).
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Disconnect powertrain control module (PCM) connector A (32P) and the cruise control actuator 12P connector.
  5. Check for continuity between PCM connector A terminal No. 5 and body ground.

    Is there continuity?

    1. YES  -Repair a short to ground in the wire between PCM connector A terminal No. 5 and cruise control actuator 12P connector terminal No. 10.
    2. NO  -Go to step 6.
  6. Check for continuity between PCM connector A terminal No. 5 and cruise control actuator 12P connector terminal No. 10.

    Is there continuity?

    1. YES  -Go to step 7.
    2. NO  -Repair an open in the wire between PCM connector A terminal No. 5 and cruise control actuator 12P connector terminal No. 10.
  7. Reconnect the PCM connector A (32P) and the cruise control actuator 12P connector.
  8. Connect a voltmeter between PCM connector A terminal No. 5 and body ground. Test drive the vehicle at speeds over 25 mph (40 km/h) with the cruise control set, and watch the voltmeter.

    Is there about 1 V?

    1. YES  -Check for loose connectors of the BLU/GRN wire between the cruise control actuator and the PCM. If necessary replace the PCM and recheck.
    2. NO  -Substitute a known-good actuator. If the system works properly, replace the cruise control actuator.
