- Raise and support the vehicle (see LIFT AND SUPPORT POINTS ).
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Release the parking brake, and remove the rear brake disc/drum (see THICKNESS AND PARALLELISM ).
- Check the parking brake linings (A) for cracking, glazing, wear, and contamination.
- Measure the parking brake lining thickness (B). Measurement does not include brake shoe thickness.
Parking brake lining thickness:
Standard: 3.4 mm (0.134 in)
Service limit: 1.0 mm (0.039 in)
- If any part of the parking brake lining thickness is less than the service limit, replace ail of the parking brake shoes as a set (see PARKING BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT ).
- Check the hub (C) for smooth operation. If it requires servicing, replace the hub bearing unit (see KNUCKLE/HUB BEARING UNIT REPLACEMENT ).
- Measure the inside diameter of the parking brake drum with inside vernier caliper.
Parking brake drum inside diameter:
Standard: 189.9-190.0 mm (7.476-7.480 in)
Service limit: 191.0 mm (7.520 in)
- If the inside diameter of the parking brake drum is more than the service limit, replace the brake disc/drum.
- Check the parking brake disc/drum for scoring, grooves, and cracks.
- Install the brake disc/drum and the rear brake caliper (see THICKNESS AND PARALLELISM ).
- Do the major parking brake adjustment (see MAJOR ADJUSTMENT (TO BE DONE WHEN REPLACING PARKING BRAKE SHOES) ).
- Clean the mating surface between the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels.
