Transmission Fluid Inspection and Replacement

  1. Raise the vehicle on a lift.
  2. Remove the filler plug (A) and washer (B), check the condition of the fluid, and make sure it is at the proper level (C).

  3. If the MTF fluid is dirty, remove the drain plug (A) and the sealing washer (B), drain the MTF fluid.

  4. Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer, and refill the transmission fluid to the proper level. Always use Honda manual transmission fluid (MTF). Using engine oil can cause stiffer shifting because it does not contain the proper additives.

    Fluid Capacity 

    2WD: 1.9 L (2.0 US qt) at fluid change 

    2.15 L (2.3 US qt) at overhaul 

    4WD: 1.9 L (2.0 US qt) at fluid change 

    2.25 L (2.4 US qt) at overhaul 

  5. Reinstall the filler plug (C) with a new sealing washer (D).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) to the data link connector (DLC). Refer to GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION
  8. Turn the ignition switch toON (II).
  9. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the engine control module (ECM). If it does not communicate, troubleshoot the DLC circuit. Refer to DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING
  10. Select GAUGES in the BODY ELECTRICAL with the HDS.
  11. Select ADJUSTMENT in the GAUGES with the HDS.
  12. Select MAINTENANCE MINDER in the ADJUSTMENT with the HDS.
  13. Select RESET in the MAINTENANCE MINDER with the HDS.
  14. Select Maintenance SUB ITEM 3 RESET with the HDS.
