KEY REMINDER BEEPS WHEN KEY IS NOT IN IGNITION SWITCH

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

SYMPTOM

The key reminder beeps when the key is not in the ignition switch.

PROBABLE CAUSE

A weak return spring in the ignition switch prevents the key stop from fully engaging when the key is removed, causing the key reminder to stay on.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the ignition switch, and rekey all lock cylinders to match the new ignition switch key.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure, then wait at least 3 minutes.
2. Remove the driver's airbag.
3. Remove the steering wheel.
4. Remove the steering column covers.
5. Disconnect the wire harness connectors from the combination switch/cable reel, then remove the combination switch/cable reel (three screws).
6. Using the appropriate tool from the KTC Trim Tool Set, remove the instrument panel.
7. Using a small chisel and a hammer, carefully "walk out" the two bolts from the steering column bracket. Discard the bolts and the bracket.
8. Disconnect the ignition switch connector, then remove the ignition switch assembly.
9. Install a new ignition switch assembly without the key inserted. Connect the ignition switch connector, then install a new steering column bracket, and hand-tighten two new shear bolts.
10. Insert the new ignition key into the switch. Make sure the steering lock works and the key turns freely
11. Tighten the two shear bolts until their hex heads twist off.
12. To avoid possible squeaks or rattles, replace any damaged clips on the instrument panel, then reinstall the instrument panel. Make sure all of the clips and harness connectors are secured.
13. Reinstall the combination switch/cable reel. Make sure the harness connectors are secured.
14. Reinstall the steering column covers.
15. Reinstall the steering wheel. Torque the steering wheel bolt to 39 N.m (29 lb-ft)  .
16. Reinstall the driver's airbag with two new Torx bolts. Torque the bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft)  .
17. Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure.
18. Rewrite the immobilizer control unit-receiver with the HDS, then clear any DTCs that you find.
19. Make sure that all vehicle controls are working properly.
20. Remove the driver's and passenger's door panels using the appropriate tool from the KTC Trim Tool Set and a trim pad remover (Snap-on A 177A or equivalent).
21. Inside the driver's door, detach the cylinder rod from its clip, then remove the retaining clip from the lock cylinder.
22. Remove the lock cylinder from the inner side of the door handle, then remove the cylinder switch from the lock cylinder (one screw). Set aside the lock cylinder.
23. Repeat steps  21 and  22 to remove the lock cylinder from the other door.
24. Remove the trunk lid lock cylinder, then set it aside.
25. Remove the rear console lock cylinder:
    • Remove the screw from the console lid, then remove the lock assembly from the lid.
    • Remove the cover, the E-clip, and the button from the lock assembly.
    • Insert the key into the lock cylinder, turn the key to the lock position, then remove the cylinder and set it aside.
26. Locate the four-digit key code printed on the key tag that comes with the new ignition key. Also locate the Honda High Security Key Codes  book. This book came with the Matrix H Key Cutting Machine.
    NOTE: Before using the Honda High Security Key Codes  book, make sure these corrections have been made:

    Pages 4 thru 51, Code Headings: 

    • Incorrect:  J H G F Z  X E D C B M/S X
    • Correct:  J H G F A  X E D C B M/S X

    Page 2, last paragraph: 

    • Incorrect:  "If a Master Key is to be cut, put a five (5)  in the blank space. Use a two (2)  if a valet key is needed."
    • Correct:  "If a Master Key is to be cut, put an M  in the blank space. Use an S  if a valet key is needed."

    Page 2, legend at the bottom: 

    • Incorrect:  "C. If a Master key is desired, then the number five (5)  should be placed in the M/S position. Place the number two (2)  in the M/S column if a Sub (Valet) key is needed."
    • Correct:  "C. If a Master Key is desired, then an M  should be placed in the M/S position. Place an S  in the M/S column if a Sub (Valet) key is needed."
27. Using a corrected Honda High Security Key Codes book, look up your four-digit key code along with its lengthier 10-digit key number. Then, write down each digit of the 10-digit key number under each letter in the code heading chart below. This gives you the complete key code number for rekeying the lock cylinders.

28. Remove the E-clip and the arm from the door lock cylinders and the trunk lid lock cylinder. The door lock cylinders and arms are marked L for the left door and R for the right door. Do not mix them up.
29. Try to insert and turn the original key in one of the lock cylinders:
    • If you can insert the key and turn it, go to step  32.
    • If you cannot insert the key or turn it, go to step 30.
30. Carefully remove the spring and the plastic retainer.
31. Using a small screwdriver, push down on the tip of the last tumbler to release it, then remove the inner cylinder from the housing, being careful not to drop any tumblers or springs. Hold the tumblers in place with your thumb and forefinger, and go to step  34.
32. While turning the key left and right and pushing on the rear of the lock cylinder to release the spring, slowly remove the inner cylinder from the housing.
33. Using your thumb and forefinger to hold the tumblers, remove the key from the inner cylinder, being careful not to drop any tumblers or springs.
34. Using the key code you created in step  27, build a new lock cylinder with new springs, a new inner cylinder, and new tumblers from the door lock cylinder kit. Make sure you put the appropriate numbered tumbler in the proper inner cylinder cavity. Apply a thin layer of Permalube to each tumbler to help lubricate and retain it.
    NOTE:

    • There are two types of tumblers. The "SUBLOCK" tumbler goes only in cavity "A." The "DISC" tumbler goes in cavities "B" through "J."
    • Cavity "E" is empty on all cylinders.
35. NOTE: If you cannot insert the key, check the tumbler in the "J" cavity. It may be out of position.
    
    Hold the tumblers in place with your thumb and forefinger, and insert the new key in the inner cylinder. Verify that all tumblers are flush with the inner cylinder. If they aren't, double-check the key number, the key code, the tumbler numbers, and the cavity locations.

37. Leave the key in the inner cylinder. Reinstall the plastic retainer and spring if you removed them in step  30. Hold the plastic retainer and spring on the housing, and insert the inner cylinder. Rotate it left and right to engage the spring to the inner cylinder. Make sure the spring is properly seated to the inner cylinder.
38. On the door lock cylinders and the trunk lid lock cylinder, install the arm with a new cylinder rod clip and a new E-clip.
39. Make sure the key can be inserted and removed easily, and that the cylinder turns with the key.
40. Repeat steps  29 thru  38 on the remaining lock cylinders.
41. Reinstall the rear console lock cylinder, then make sure the rear console lock turns smoothly.
42. Reinstall the trunk lid lock cylinder, then make sure the trunk lid lock turns smoothly.
43. Reinstall the cylinder switches on the door lock cylinders, then reinstall the door lock cylinders into the inner sides of the door handles.
44. Inside the doors, reinstall the retaining clips on the lock cylinders, then attach the cylinder rods to their clips.
45. Replace any damaged door panel clips, then reinstall the door panels.
46. Check that the door locks and the door handles operate smoothly.
