Valve Inspection: Removal
- Vehicle - Lift
1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported. - HDS DLC - Connection
NOTE: For specific operations, refer to the user's manual that came with the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS). Make sure the HDS is loaded with the latest software. 1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
- Fuel Filler Cap
1. Remove the fuel fill cap to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank. - Fuel Pump OFF
1. From the INSPECTION MENU of the HDS, select Fuel Pump OFF, then start the engine, and let it idle until it stalls. NOTE:- Do not allow the engine to idle above 1, 000 rpm or the PCM will continue to operate the fuel pump.
- Pending or Confirmed DTC may be set during this procedure. Check for DTCs, and clear them as needed.
2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- 12 Volt Battery Terminal - Disconnection
1. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0). 2. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable with the battery sensor (A) from the 12 volt battery.
NOTE:- Always disconnect the negative side first.
- To protect the battery sensor connector (B) from damage, do not hold it when removing the negative terminal.
- Do not disconnect the battery sensor from the negative terminal (C).
3. Remove the harness clip (E).
4. Disconnect the positive cable (D) from the 12 volt battery.
- Air Cleaner
1. Disconnect the intake air duct (A) from the air cleaner (B). 2. Remove the air cleaner.
- Fuel Pressure - Relieving
1. Remove the bracket (A). 2. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (B).
3. Check the fuel quick-connect fitting for dirt, and clean it if needed.
4. Place a rag or shop towel over the quick-connect fitting (A). 5. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting: Hold the connector (A) with one hand, and squeeze the retainer tabs (B) with the other hand to release them from the locking tabs (C). Pull the connector off. NOTE:- Be careful not to damage the line (D) or other parts.
- Do not use tools.
- If the connector does not move, keep the retainer tabs pressed down, and alternately pull and push the connector until it comes off easily.
- Do not remove the retainer from the line; once removed, the retainer must be replaced with a new one.
- Radiator Cap
1. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap. - Radiator Coolant - Drain
1. Loosen the drain plug (A), and drain the coolant. 2. Tighten the radiator drain plug securely.
- Engine Cover
1. Remove the engine cover. - Intake Air Resonator
1. Remove the intake air resonator. - Intake Air Duct
1. Remove the intake air duct. - Intake Air Pipe
1. Remove the intake air pipe. - Throttle Body - Move
1. Remove the throttle body without disconnecting the hoses. - Splash Shield
1. Remove the splash shield (A).
- Engine Undercover
1. Remove the engine undercover (A). - Intake Manifold Bracket
1. Remove the intake manifold bracket mounting bolts. - Intake Manifold/Chamber Peripheral Assembly
1. Disconnect the connectors (A). 2. Remove the engine wire harness (B).
- Intake Manifold/Chamber Assembly
1. Disconnect the PCV hose (A). 2. Remove the intake manifold/chamber assembly (B).
- Ignition Coil
1. Disconnect the connectors. 2. Remove the ignition coils.
- Cylinder Head Cover Peripheral Assembly
1. Remove the harness holder (A). 2. Disconnect the breather hose (B).
- Cylinder Head Cover and/or Packing
1. Remove the cylinder head cover. - Cylinder Head Peripheral Assembly
1. Remove the fuel pipe (A). 2. Disconnect the connectors. 3. Remove the harness holder. 4. Remove the bolts. 5. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A), the water bypass hose (B), and the heater hose (C). - A/F Sensor
1. Disconnect the connector. 2. Remove the A/F sensor (A).
- Wiper Arm Assembly NOTE: Set the wiper arms to the auto-stop position before removal.
1. Remove the cowl top wiper covers (A).
2. Remove the wiper arms (B).
- Both Side Cowl Covers
1. Remove the side cowl cover (A). 2. The left side is shown; repeat on the right side.
- Center Cowl Cover
1. Remove the center cowl cover (A). 2. Disconnect the windshield washer tube (B).
3. If necessary, remove the hood rear seal (C).
- Under Cowl Panel
1. Remove the under cowl panel (A). - EGR Pipe
1. Remove the EGR pipe (A). - Exhaust Chamber Cover
1. Remove the exhaust chamber cover. - WU-TWC Lower Side - Reconnection
1. Remove the bolts (A and B). - WU-TWC
1. Remove the WU-TWC. - Check the No. 1 Piston at Top Dead Center (With Cam Chain Case/Oil Pump)
1. Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). The "UP" mark (A) on the camshaft sprocket should be at the top, and the TDC grooves (B) on the camshaft sprocket should line up with the top edge of the head. - Tire and Wheel-Removal, Front Right
1. Remove the center cap (A). 2. Remove the right front wheel.
- Water Pump Pulley Mounting Bolt - Loosen
1. Loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts (A). - Drive Belt
1. Move the auto-tensioner (A) to relieve tension from the drive belt (B). 2. Remove the drive belt.
- Water Pump Pulley
1. Remove the water pump pulley. - Auto Tensioner Assembly
1. Remove the drive belt auto-tensioner. - Water Pump
1. Remove the water pump. - Crankshaft Pulley
1. Hold the pulley with the holder handle (A) and the crankshaft pulley holder (B). 2. Remove the bolt with a socket, 19 mm (C) and a breaker bar.
3. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Engine Jack Support (State Of A Low Vehicle)
1. Lift and support the engine with a jack and a wood block under the oil pan. - Side Engine Mount
1. Remove the A/C pipe bracket (A). 2. Remove the ground cable (B).
3. Remove the side engine mount bracket (C) and the side engine mount assembly (D).
- Cam Chain Case
1. Remove the cam chain case. - Cam Chain Inspection
1. Measure the cam chain separation. If the distance is less than the service limit, replace the cam chain and the cam chain tensioner. Standard Distance: 19 mm (0.75 in) Service Limit: 15 mm (0.59 in) - Cam Chain Tensioner Slider
1. Apply new engine oil to the sliding surface of the cam chain tensioner slider (A). 2. Hold the cam chain tensioner slider with a screwdriver, then remove the upper bolt (B), and loosen the lower bolt (C).
3. Remove the cam chain tensioner slider. - Cam Chain Tensioner and Guide
1. Remove the cam chain tensioner (A) and the cam chain guide (B). - Cam Chain
1. Remove the cam chain. - Cylinder Head Assembly
1. Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts in sequence, 1/3 turn at a time, repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened. 2. Remove the cylinder head.
- Rocker Arm Assembly
1. Loosen the rocker arm adjusting screws (A). 2. Remove the camshaft holder bolts. To prevent damaging the camshaft, loosen the bolts in sequence two turns at a time. 3. Remove the rocker arm assembly. - Camshaft
1. Remove the camshaft. - Valve Spring
1. Using an appropriate-sized socket (A) and a plastic mallet (B), lightly tap the spring retainer to loosen the valve cotters. 2. Install the valve spring compressor attachment and the valve spring compressor. 3. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve cotters.
4. Remove the valve spring compressor and the valve spring compressor attachment.
5. Remove the spring retainer, the valve spring, and the valve.
- Valve Seal
1. Install the valve guide seal remover. 2. Remove the valve seal. - Valve Spring Seat
1. Remove the valve spring seat.
