TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): 11-062, Date of Issue:  October 1, 2011
HONDA: 2012 Insight
CATEGORY: PDI
APPLIES TO: 2012 Insight - ALL

BACKGROUND

This service bulletin gives you the needed information for the PDI of the 2012 Insight.

NOTE: To complete the PDI on a vehicle with a navigation system, refer to Service Bulletin 11-063, 2012 INSIGHT: PDI OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM .

This bulletin includes these PDI procedures:

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

None. The information in this service bulletin is considered part of the PDI.

PDI PROCEDURES

Before doing the PDI, review these items:

Make sure you record the PDI on the appropriate pages of the vehicle's Service History booklet. The PDI procedure is not finished until this service bulletin and the Service History checklist are completed.

NOTE: Some items needed to complete the PDI are in the cargo area (floor mats, body plugs, license plate hardware, vehicle manuals) and in the glove box (radio code cards, shift lock release cover).

Make Sure the TPMS Sensors Are Operational, and Set the Tire Pressures

NOTE: If this procedure is not done during the PDI, the TPMS indicator will come on after driving about 20 miles. When the TPMS indicator comes on, the TPMS control unit also sets one or more of these TPMS DTCs: 32, 34, 36, 38, or 41. The repair of any of these DTCs at PDI, or shortly after, is not warrantable.

To make sure the TPMS sensors are operational and the tire pressures are set, do this:

Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

  1. Use a tire pressure gauge with a bleeder valve to quickly  lower the pressure in one tire to 18 psi or less  .
    NOTE:
    • The tire pressure must be lowered by at least 3 psi  within 15 seconds  , or the TPMS sensor in the wheel will not be activated.
    • If you are not sure the TPMS sensors were activated, refer to the December 2008 ServiceNews article, A08120A, MEET THE NEW TPMS SENSOR TOOL!
    • To ensure accuracy, periodically check your tire pressure gauge with the calibration tool (P/N 07AAJ-000A100).
  2. Adjust the tire pressure to the cold inflation pressure listed on the driver's doorjamb label. If you are in a cold climate region, make sure the tire is at the same temperature as the outside air before adjusting the pressure; otherwise, the TPMS low tire pressure indicator may show low tire pressure in cold weather.
  3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other three tires.
NOTE: The spare tire does not have a TPMS sensor. Make sure that the spare tire is inflated to the pressure listed on the doorjamb label.

Install the Backup Fuse

In the under-dash fuse/relay box, there is an orange backup fuse holder that contains a 7.5 A fuse and a 15 A fuse. When the vehicle's operation checks at the factory are completed, the 7.5 A backup fuse is electronically commanded to blow.

Before installing the new backup fuse, wait at least 1 minute after turning the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then pull open the fuse access panel on the lower driver's side dashboard, and pull out the orange backup fuse holder. Note the cut-out at the upper corner of the holder.

  1. Turn the fuse holder over so the cut-out is at the bottom, then reinsert the holder and the two fuses into fuse/relay box.
    G07659309
  2. Pull out the fuse holder again. The blown 7.5 A fuse should come out with the holder, and the new 15 A backup fuse should stay in the No. 1 position in the fuse box. Make sure the fuse is securely seated. Discard the fuse holder and the blown 7.5 A fuse.

Check the 12 V Battery

To ensure long battery life and that the customer receives a fully charged battery, the battery must be tested in these instances:

  • When the vehicle first arrives at the dealership
  • During PDI (if done at a later time)
  • During regular intervals
  • Just before delivering the vehicle to the customer

Test the battery with the ED-18 battery tester using the instructions in Service Bulletin 88-023, BATTERY TESTING AND REPLACEMENT . Make sure you connect both tester leads directly to the battery. If the ED-18 tester does not display GOOD BATTERY  , charge the battery using the GR8 Battery Diagnostic Station.

Write down the GOOD BATTERY  10-digit code in the Service History booklet: During the PDI, write down the code in the "Under Hood (Engine Cold)" section, and then when the vehicle is delivered to the customer, write down the code in the "Final Inspection (At Delivery)" section.

NOTE: Make sure your ED-18 has the latest software installed prior to use. See Service Bulletin 09-045, ED-18 BATTERY ANALYZER UPDATE INFORMATION .

Remove the Exterior Protective Coverings

Carefully remove all of the exterior protective coverings, including the wheel coverings. On Base models, install the wheel covers. Refer to Service Bulletin 03-080, REMOVAL OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS DURING PDI .

Fuel the Vehicle, and Check the Fluid Levels

After fueling the vehicle, check these fluid levels, and top off any if needed:

  • Engine oil
  • Engine coolant
  • CVT fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid

Install the Front License Plate Holder

The license plate holder is stored in the cargo area. If state regulations require the use of a front license plate, install the front license plate holder as shown.

NOTE: The remaining bolts and screws found with the license plate holder are for installing the front and rear license plates.

Install the Floor Mats (LX and EX Models Only)

The floor mats are in the cargo area. Install them in the appropriate positions. Place the driver's floor mat eyelets over the anchors on the floor, then turn the knobs clockwise to lock the anchors.

G07659312

Install the Roof Antenna

Install the roof antenna on the roof mount, and turn the base until it is finger-tight.

G07659313

Remove the Rear Strake Tape

Protective tape is applied to the rear strakes to avoid damage during transportation. Remove the tape.

G07659314

Install the Body Plugs

NOTE: The four body plugs are part of the noise reduction package. They play a significant role in reducing road noise.
G07659315
G07659316

Install the Shift Lock Release Cover

The shift lock release is to the left of the shift lever. For vehicle operation during shipment, the shift lock release cover is removed and stored in the PDI bag in the glove box. Remove the cover from the bag, and install it in the slot.

G07659317

Set the Radio and the Clock (Models Without Navigation System)

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and make sure the radio is on.
  2. If not already done, enter the audio unit anti-theft code.
NOTE: Two code labels and a plastic code card are stored in a small plastic bag in the glove box.
    • Attach one of the labels to the code card, put it in the plastic bag, and return it to the glove box.
    • Attach the other label to the PDI repair order which is kept in the dealer's service records.

If the card is lost, you can easily get the audio serial number without  removing the audio unit. To get the code, do this:

    • Turn off the audio unit.
    • Hold down the 1 and 6 radio presets at the same time, then turn on the audio unit. The 8-digit serial number appears on the audio display.
    • Go to a iN workstation, and access the audio Anti-theft code  inquiry option. Use the serial number to look up the 5-digit anti-theft code.
    • If the code does not work, call the Warranty department.
  3. Enter a local AM or FM station on all the radio preset bars. To enter a station, press and hold the left or right side of the preset bar until you hear a beep.
  4. Press and hold the CLOCK  button on the audio panel until you hear a beep and the clock flashes.
  5. Press and hold the (preset 1) side of the 1-2 preset bar to set the hour.
  6. Press and hold the (preset 2) side of the 1-2 preset bar to set the minute.
  7. Once the desired time is displayed, press and release the CLOCK  button.

Check the Remote Transmitters and the Keys

Check the operation of all keyless transmitters and keys by unlocking/locking the doors and the hatch.

Check the HandsFreeLink Operation (Models With Navigation System)

Make sure that the HandsFreeLink (HFL) system is working and ready to use, start the vehicle, and hold the HFL BACK button (on the steering wheel) for 10 seconds. The system should say, "The HandsFreeLink system is OK."

Check the IMA System Air Intake

The IMA system is behind the rear seat and under the cargo area floor. A fan in the system cools the heat generated by the IMA electronics and the IMA battery. Cool air is drawn from an air intake on the left side of the rear seat. Make sure this intake is free of obstructions, and instruct customers to keep this area clear.

G07659318

Charge the IMA System Battery

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Press and release the INFO button on the steering wheel until the IMA battery level indicator appears on the multi-information display.
    G07659319
  3. Hold the engine between 3,500-4,000 rpm until the IMA battery indicator shows a full battery. This may take a few minutes.
NOTE: The IMA battery, like all batteries, slowly discharges if unused for a long period. To prevent damage to the IMA battery, it needs to be charged every 90 days. When the vehicle arrives at the dealership, note the assembly date on the label. This label is usually found either on the front seat or in the owner's manual packet. If it is close to 90 days since the last charge, install the backup fuse, and charge the IMA system fully.
    G07659320

If the vehicle is going into storage after charging, remove the backup fuse to prevent drain on the 12 V battery. Make a note on the Monroney label that the IMA battery was charged and the date it was done. The customer should be informed of the IMA battery requirements for long-term storage (see the owner's manual).

To dispose of an IMA battery, call the IMA battery information line at 800-555-3497  . Do not throw the IMA battery in the trash or allow the vehicle to be crushed or junked with the IMA battery still installed.

Check the Auto Idle Stop

To improve overall fuel economy, the auto idle stop feature shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop.

  1. Make sure the IMA battery charge display shows that the battery is more than 50 percent charged.
  2. Make sure that the engine is at normal operating temperature.
  3. Turn off the climate controls and the defroster.
  4. Test-drive the vehicle above 30 mph for at least 3 minutes.
  5. Come to a normal stop, and do not release the brake pedal. The engine should stop.
  6. Make sure the engine stops and the auto idle stop indicator in the gauge control module flashes.
  7. Release the brake pedal, and accelerate normally. The engine should automatically restart when you release the brake pedal.

Do the Idle Learn Procedure

To ensure a steady engine idle, do the idle learn.

NOTE: Idle speed adjustment is done by the PCM; there is no adjustment screw. Idle learn must be done whenever you reset, update, or replace the PCM. It does not need to be done after you clear DTCs with the HDS.
  1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
  2. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or Neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.
  3. Let the engine idle for 10 minutes with the throttle closed.

Remove the Interior Protective Coverings

When you are finished working inside the vehicle, remove all protective coverings from the interior.
