DTC 86-14: F-CAN Communication With Gauge Control Module Malfunction

86-14 F-CAN Communication With Gauge Control Module Malfunction    
  1. DTC check:
    • 1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
    • 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
    • 3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
    • 4. Start the engine for at least 5 seconds.
    • 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

      86-14 F-CAN Communication With Gauge Control Module Malfunction    

    Is DTC 86-14 indicated? 

    YES  : If DTC 86-14 is only indicated, go to step 2.

    YES  : If DTC 86-11 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 .

    NO  : Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting.

  2. Body electrical system DTC check:
    • 1. Check for gauge control module DTCs with the HDS.
      DTC Description DTC
         

    Are any DTCs indicated? 

    YES  : Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

    NO  : Go to step 3.

  3. Open wire check (F CAN-L, F CAN-H lines):
    • 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
    • 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector

      Gauge control module 32P connector

    • 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

      Test condition IG LOCK (0)

      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected

      Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected

      Test circuit F CAN-L

      Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 26 (RED)

      Test point 2 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 20 (RED)

      Test circuit F CAN-H

      Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 38 (WHT)

      Test point 2 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 19 (WHT)

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  : The F CAN-L, F CAN-H wires are OK. Go to step 4.

    NO  : Repair an open in the wire between the gauge control module and the VSA modulator-control unit.

  4. Gauge control module check (substitution):

    Is DTC 86-14 indicated? 

    YES  : Go to step 5.

    NO  : Replace the original gauge control module  See Rewriting the ODO Data and Transferring the Maintenance Minder™ Data to a New Gauge Control Module or GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  5. VSA modulator-control unit check (update):

    Is DTC 86-14 indicated? 

    YES  : Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit  See VSA SENSOR NEUTRAL POSITION MEMORIZATION , VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT UPDATE  or VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    NO  : Troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.
