Front Knuckle/Hub/Wheel Bearing Replacement: Replacement
Refer to the Exploded View as needed during the following procedures.
- Vehicle - Lift
- Front Wheel - Remove
- Front Brake Caliper - Remove
1. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A). 2. Remove the caliper assembly (B).
- To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage.
- Do not twist the brake hose excessively.
- Front Wheel Speed Sensor - RemoveNOTE:
Do not disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector.
- Front Spindle Nut - Remove
1. Pry up the stake (A) on the spindle nut (B). 2. Remove the spindle nut.
- Front Brake Disc - Remove
- Hub for Damage and Cracks - Check
1. Check the front hub for damage and cracks. - Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnect

1. Remove the cotter pin (A). 2. Remove the nut (B).
NOTE:Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the ball joint remover.
- Lower Arm Ball Joint - Disconnect
1. Remove the lock pin (A). 2. Remove the castle nut (B).
NOTE:Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the ball joint remover.
- Knuckle/Hub Assembly - Remove
1. Remove the damper pinch bolt (A). 2. Move the knuckle (B) downward, and remove the knuckle from the damper.
3. Pull the knuckle outward, and separate the outboard joint (C) from the front hub using a soft face hammer outward, then remove the knuckle/hub.
NOTE:Do not pull the driveshaft end outward. The inner driveshaft inboard joint may come apart.
- Hub - Remove
1. Separate the hub (A) from the knuckle (B) using the hub dis/assembly pin and a hydraulic press. Hold the knuckle with the attachment (C) of the hydraulic press or equivalent tool. - Be careful not to damage or deform the splash guard (D).
- Hold onto the hub to keep it from falling when pressed clear.
2. Press out the wheel bearing inner race (A) of the hub (B) using the hub dis/assembly pin, a commercially available bearing separator (C), and a press. - Splash Guard and Snap Ring - Remove
1. Remove the splash guard (A). 2. Remove the snap ring (B).
- Bearing - Remove
1. Press the wheel bearing (A) out of the knuckle (B) using the bearing driver attachment, the driver handle, and a press. - Bearing - Install
1. Wash the knuckle and the hub thoroughly in high flash point solvent before reassembly. 2. Press a new wheel bearing (A) into the knuckle (B) using the old bearing (C), a steel plate (D), the oil seal driver attachment, the support base, and a press.
- Install the wheel bearing with the wheel speed sensor magnetic encoder (E) (brown color) toward the inside of the knuckle.
- Remove any oil, grease, dust, metal debris, and other foreign material from the encoder surface.
- Keep any magnetic tools away from the encoder surface.
- Keep the wheel bearing and magnetic encoder away from any magnetic field. The encoder can be damaged or erased.
- Be careful not to damage the encoder surface when you insert the wheel bearing.
- Splash Guard and Snap Ring - Install
1. Install the new snap ring (A). 2. Install the splash guard (B).
- Hub - Install
1. Install the hub (A) onto the knuckle (B) using the bearing driver attachment, the driver handle, the support base, and a hydraulic press. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the splash guard (C). - Knuckle/Hub Assembly - Install
