Test Procedures

NOTE: It is recommended that vehicle cool down overnight before starting IAT sensor test procedure.
  1. Connect scan tool to data link connector. Turn ignition on and verify DTC P0112 or P0113 is set. If either DTC is set, go to next step. If neither DTC is set, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Ensure engine is cooled to ambient air temperature. Measure ambient air temperature and turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read IAT sensor temperature. If IAT sensor temperature and ambient air temperature are not about the same, go to next step. If IAT sensor temperature and ambient air temperature are about the same, no problem is indicated at this time. Problem is intermittent or was repaired and DTCs were not cleared. Clear DTCs and ensure IAT sensor is operating properly.
  3. Locate IAT sensor in MAF/IAT sensor assembly in intake air duct between air cleaner and throttle body. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF/IAT sensor 5-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and 5-pin sensor connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/White wire). If approximately 4.5-5.0 volts is present, go to step  5 . If zero volts is present, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 81-pin harness connector. Measure resistance in Blue/White wire between MAF/IAT sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 2 and ECM 81-pin connector terminal No. 33. If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in Blue/White wire. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify IAT sensor operation.
  5. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance in Yellow wire between MAF/IAT sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 5 and ECM 81-pin connector terminal No. 42. If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in Yellow wire. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify IAT sensor operation.
  6. Ensure ECM connector terminals are okay. If connector terminals are okay, replace MAF/IAT sensor with a known-good component. Reconnect MAF/IAT sensor and ECM connectors. Clear DTCs and verify IAT sensor operation. If problem still exists, replace ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify IAT sensor operation.
