Test Procedures

  1. Turn ignition on. Connect scan tool to data link connector and verify DTCs P0444 or P0445 is set. Turn ignition off. Disconnect canister purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and canister purge control solenoid valve connector terminal No. 1 (Red wire on Elantra; Pink wire on Tiburon). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open or short to ground in circuit between engine control relay connector terminal No. 3 and canister purge control solenoid valve connector. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system operation.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect canister purge control solenoid valve and ECM 88-pin connectors. Using a jumper wire, connect canister purge control solenoid valve connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Black wire) to ground. Measure resistance between ground and ECM connector terminal No. 36 (Red/Black wire). If resistance is one ohm or less, remove jumper wire and go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in circuit between purge control valve and ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system operation.
  3. Disconnect canister purge control solenoid valve and ECM 88-pin connectors. Check for continuity between ground and purge control valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Black wire). If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in circuit between purge control valve and ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system operation.
  4. Measure resistance between canister purge control solenoid valve terminals No. 1 and 2. If resistance is approximately 20-32 ohms at 68°F (20°C), verify ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If connector terminals are okay, replace canister purge control solenoid valve. If problem persists, replace ECM. If resistance not approximately 20-32 ohms at 68°F (20°C), replace canister purge control solenoid valve. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system operation.
