ECM REPROGRAMMING FOR ENGINE HESITATION

DESCRIPTION

This bulletin provides the repair procedure for the following conditions:

  1. Engine hesitation which may occur under specific conditions:
    • Accelerating, usually from a stop.
    • Going through the gears, an engine hesitation may be felt a few seconds after a shift, most likely when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear.
    • Condition is more noticeable in MTM vehicles, but may also be felt in ATM.
    • Engine RPMs at 3000 (+/- 500 RPM).
    • More noticeable when the engine is cold, but still may occur when warmed up.
    • Condition is reproducible.
    • No codes/MIL.
    • No other driveability conditions.

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING

  1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
  2. The Data Link Connector (DLC) should never be disconnected during reprogramming.
    WARNING: If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
  3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
  4. Do not turn the ignition key off during reprogramming.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

NOTE: Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.

AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE

  1. Attach the DLC (Data Link Connector) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro main body and tighten the 2 bolts securely.
  2. Remove the current system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card with the new ECM program into the Hi-Scan Pro's top slot.

  3. Remove the fuse box cover. Plug the DLC cable from the Hi-Scan Pro into the data link connector in the fuse box.

  4. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  5. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
  6. Select option "22. GK 2.7 HESITATION" and press ENTER.

  7. Select the option "01. GK 2.7 HESITATION [AUTO MODE]" and press ENTER. This option automatically detects the ECM type and downloads the correct program.

  8. Enter "1229" as the password and press ENTER.

  9. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication and check the ECM ID. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ECM automatically.

    NOTE: The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current ECM ID (affected) and assigns the new ECM ID (target) and displays them for about 1 second.

    NOTE:
    • The current ECM ID will be replaced by the new ECM ID.
    • If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section.

      WARNING: Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.
  10. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication.

  11. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, the process is complete.

    NOTE: Before turning the Hi-Scan Pro off, check the new ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM program has been downloaded. Refer to the ECM specification table on page 2 of this TSB.
  12. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Wait 20 seconds and then start the engine to check for proper operation.

MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE

NOTE: In the event menu option "01. GK 2.7 HESITATION [AUTO MODE]" fails to download the new ECM program, option "02. GK 2.7 HESITATION [ERROR MODE]" must be used.
  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
  3. Select option "22. GK 2.7 HESITATION" and press ENTER.

  4. Select option "02. GK 2.7 HESITATION [ERROR MODE]" and press ENTER.

  5. Choose the menu option "01" or "02" which corresponds to your vehicle specification and press ENTER.

  6. Select the correct password for manual update from the chart below. Enter the correct password and press ENTER.

    01. A/T OR 6 SPEED M/T - IMMO: 39109-37700 7700
    02. ONLY 5 SPEED M/T - IMMO: 39109-37710 7710
    WARNING: Be sure to input the correct password. If an incorrect password is selected, the correct ECM software will not be downloaded.
  7. Wait until the reprogramming is complete. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ECM automatically. Refer to Fig 9 .
    NOTE: The Hi-Scan Pro displays the new ECM ID on the screen.

  8. The Hi-Scan Pro establishes communication. Refer to Fig 9 .
  9. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed (Fig 10 ), the process is complete.
    NOTE: Before turning the Hi-Scan Pro off, check the new ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM program has been downloaded. Refer to the 2003 TIBURON ECM SPECIFICATIONS  TABLE.
  10. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Wait 20 seconds and then start the engine for proper operation.
