Pinion Gap

CAUTION: This test must be performed quickly (in less than 10 seconds) to prevent the coil from overheating.
  1. Disconnect the field coil wire from the M-terminal of the solenoid. See Fig 1 .
  2. Connect a 12 volt battery the S-terminal and the M-terminal. The pinion should move out.
  3. Check the pinion for stopper clearance (pinion gap) with a feeler gauge. See Fig 2 .
  4. If the pinion gap is out of specification, adjust by adding or removing gaskets between the solenoid and the front bracket. See Fig 3 .
