Alternator Test

NOTE: Before starting test, ensure battery is fully charged.
  1. Check fusible link. Replace if necessary. Turn ignition on, and check charge indicator light on instrument panel. If light comes on, go to step 3). If light is off, go to next step.
    NOTE: Terminals "S", "L", "B", and "E" are marked on alternator's rear cover. Terminal "F" is an internal terminal.
  2. Disconnect terminals "S" and "L". Ground terminal "L" wire. If light remains off, replace indicator bulb and repeat step 1). If light comes on, replace damaged IC regulator.
  3. Start and run engine at idle. If indicator light is off, system is okay. If indicator light is on, check drive belt, connection at terminal "B" of generator, and fuse for terminal "S". Repair or replace as necessary. Start and run engine at idle. If light goes off, system is okay. If light remains on, go to next step.
  4. Ensure terminals "S" and "L" are properly connected. Run engine at 1500 RPM, and measure voltage at terminal "B". If voltage is more than 15.5 volts, replace damaged IC regulator. If no voltage is generated, IC regulator is okay. Check remaining generator parts. Repair or replace as necessary.
