CLASSIFICATION: EC98-028
SECTION: Engine Control System
APPLIED VEHICLE(S): All 1996 I30 (CA32)

NOTE: This bulletin supersedes bulletin ITB96-004. Please discard all paper copies of ITB96-004.

SERVICE INFORMATION

If an applied 1996 I30 has the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) "ON" and a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0136 (rear oxygen sensor) is found stored in the ECM self diagnosis memory, the sensor element may be contaminated.

A new rear oxygen sensor is now available to correct this incident, if it should occur.

Use the following service procedure to verify the condition exists and replace the rear oxygen sensor.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Verify the MIL light is on and DTC P0136 is stored in self diagnosis memory.
  2. Refer to REAR O2 SENSOR OVERALL OPERATION TEST  attachment (Attachment A) to verify the operation of the oxygen sensor.
    1. If the oxygen sensor passes the operational test, this bulletin does not apply.
    2. If the oxygen sensor fails the operational test, replace the oxygen sensor with the appropriate part listed in the PARTS INFORMATION  section of this bulletin.
    3. You must determine the vehicle's manufacture date in order to replace the oxygen sensor with the appropriate part:
      1. If the vehicle was manufactured before 6/96, install oxygen sensor P/N 226A0-40U62 (see Fig 1 ).
      2. If the vehicle was manufactured after 6/96, install oxygen sensor P/N 226A0-49U02 (see Fig 1 ).

REAR O2 SENSOR OVERALL OPERATION TEST

Procedure 1

To effectively monitor Rear O2 operation, it will be necessary to use CONSULT Active Test mode to artificially enrich and lean the engine's fuel mixture. When the fuel injection quantity is forced 25% richer or leaner, the Rear O2 Sensor voltage should correspond with the mixture shift.

  1. Start the engine and allow it to warm to operating temperature.
  2. Connect CONSULT and follow the sequence below:
    • Start
    • Active Test
    • Fuel Injection Test
    • Selections from Menu:
      • CMPS-RPM (REF)
      • Coolant Temp/S
      • RR O2 Sensor (B1) or RR O2 Sensor (B2) (Where B1 or B2 refers to the engine bank identified by the DTC stored)
    • Touch "enter" on the keypad
    • Touch "start" on the screen
  3. Hold the engine speed at 2000 RPM for one minute to ensure the catalyst and Rear O2 Sensor are fully warmed up.
  4. Continue to hold the engine speed at 2000 and observe the Rear O2 Sensor voltage; it should be steady at either the low or the high end of its range.
  5. Touch "Qu" on the CONSULT screen several times to raise the fuel injection quantity to +25%. The Rear O2 Sensor voltage should shift to its high range, 0.6 to 1.6 volts.
  6. Touch "Qd" on the CONSULT screen several times to lower the fuel injection quantity to -25%. The Rear O2 Sensor should shift to its low range, 0.0 to 0.6 volt.
    • If the Rear O2 Sensor output voltage is always at the low end of the range, carefully check the harness for shorts to ground or open circuit. If the harness is OK, replace the O2 Sensor.
    • If the Rear O2 Sensor output voltage does not shift to match the rich or lean condition caused by modifying the fuel injection by +/-25%, replace the Rear O2 Sensor.
    • If the Rear O2 Sensor exceeds its maximum voltage (see the Rear O2 Sensor Voltage Range Matrix below), carefully check the ECM connector for moisture or corrosion. Also check the harness for crossed wires feeding voltage into the O2 Sensor circuit. If the harness and connectors check OK, replace the Rear O2 Sensor.
